About Us

Owners Bernie and Karen Duggan offer over 50 years in the Retail Hardware Business. The Duggan's are active members of their local community, members of the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Valley's Business Person of the Year in 2006. The Duggan's were instrumental in "Merchants against Meth", Valley Leadership Program, Waverly Fire Department, contributors to many organizations in the Valley. It is there belief "although it is important for the Community to know we contribute doing it quietly behinds the scene saying it is best to give because you want to and not just for recognition". Bernie is generally working in the Rental Department making sure all the equipment is clean and in perfect running condition and spends his off time Golfing, mowing or riding the motorcycle.

Dorothy Torbin our General Manager offers several years of retail and managerial experience at her previous job.  Dorothy is married to Nate and best Mom to Haley.  Dorothy can be seen cruising around town in her bright yellow Mustang.  Karen Smith offers over 20 years of retail experience here at Horn's. Karen runs the Paint Department and independently runs a not-for-profit cat and kitten rescue. Dennis Lantz is in charge of the Plumbing Department and Rental as well as being active with the local ATLAT Group in the local community, writing or working in his wood shop. Joe Woodcock one of our everything guys in Rental and most other Departments, Joe is married to Chris and enjoys his Grandchildren, working in the yard and rehabbing the house, and always building something

Rose Andersen lives in the country and is a nature lover, best Aunt ever and responsible for the Appliance and Housewares Department .  Christine Woodcock a musician, loves her guitar, and writes her own music, is our Bookkeeper and Chief Office Person.

Horn's First 100 Years

Serving the Valley since 1912, and 4 generations later, Horn’s True Value welcomes you to come in and shop around. We have something for the youngest member of your family to the oldest! The Horn Family originally started business as brothers Edward and Frank Horn went into partnership and opened Perfection Laundry Service in 1912 in Athens Pa. In 1925, continuing growth, they built a state of the art full service auto repair center and gas station in Sayre, PA across from the post office. Edward's son Raymond and wife Hilda Horn continued the business in Sayre operating a Firestone Store, Gas Station, Auto Repair Service Center, and fuel service until the late 1960's.

Raymond's sons Edward and Frederick Horn worked along side of their parents and moved to Waverly New York and expanding our Firestone Store and continued with fuel oil delivery, auto repairs and gas service as well. Edward left the business and Frederick continued with his parents. In 1974 we signed up as a member of the True Value Hardware Co-op and continued to grow and expand our business from there. Frederick and wife Catherine took over ownership in the mid 70's. Problems with "Mother Nature" brought us back across the border to Pennsylvania to our current location. In 1999 Bernie and Karen (Horn) Duggan took over ownership of the business. Epiphany School Fundraisers

Horn's True Value each year assist the Epiphnay School by offering a True Value Shopping Night. The School publicizes the event through local media, the church bulletin, and school newsletter. The Student Council comes to the store along with the Teachers and distribute coupons, assist the customers, and advise customers if they use the coupon at the checkout that the School will receive 10% of the Sale for their school. Merchants against Meth

We started the Merchants group several years ago when the height of the Drug Trade started to impact our business. We became aware of what customers were purchasing to manufacture the product and received a form letter and fax number where we sent copies of invoices as well as license plate numbers. Our belief is we may loose a customer but save a life which was much more important to us than the sale of product.

True Value Best Hardware Store in Town

Celebrated 100 Years in Business and were also awarded the Best Hardware Store in Town by True Value Hardware.  Dinner, award banquets and honored by True Value Members and Management. It was very humbling but a great honor and a tribute to our family, co-workers, and our community at large. 

NY State Assembly Honoring our Neighbor's Award

This award was presented to Horn's True Value for services to our communities during the 2011 Hurricane Lee and the subsequent flooding and devastation from the storm.

Celebrated 100 Years in Business 

We had the amazing opportunity to celebrate 100 Years in Business with Family, Co-workers, Friends, Chamber of Commerce, True Value Cooperate, and House of Representative.  Hurricane Lee hit the area the next day and tried to dampen our spirits but didn't happen!
